Most rooms in a hospital are never empty for long. Conventional UVC must be used with no one present, so it cannot help during surgery, clinics or a busy emergency department. Zener is designed for exactly those hours.
UVX, the Canadian manufacturer, describes Zener as a smart ceiling-mounted device about the size of a smoke alarm. It fits existing ceiling types and runs automatically, so it adds protection without changing clinical workflow.
Zener emits filtered far-UVC light at 222 nm. At this wavelength light is absorbed in the outer, non-living layer of the skin and the tear film of the eye, while still inactivating bacteria, viruses and fungi, which are far smaller than human cells. A filter removes longer, more penetrating UV wavelengths.
Because it disinfects the air continuously, far-UVC is often described in terms of equivalent air changes. UVX reports that third-party testing to ANSI/AHAM AC-5, ASHRAE 241 and FDA GLP showed Zener can raise the equivalent air changes in an operating room by around 80%, without HVAC works.
